Ac History:
1903 saw the first introduction of an AC automobile. It was at a motor show presentation in 1903.Displayed under the name of Weller, the car was a 20hp touring car. Due to financial difficulties, Weller abandoned his plans to produce a more powerful 20hp car and instead produced a little delivery 3 wheeler called the Auto-Carrier. He later founded his company called Autocars and Accessories and started commercial production in 1907.They soon started manufacture of passenger versions of the Auto-Carrier called the Auto-Carrier Sociable. In 1911,the company became Auto Carriers Ltd and used the ‘AC’ logo. They produced the first 4-wheeler in 1913.Production of cars was then interrupted due to the world wars and only resumed in 1947 when government gave them a big contract. The production of the AC Ace started in 1953.With a vulnerable AC Weller 2 litre engine, this lightweight chassis designed by John Tojeiro. An Ac Bristol was then designed and participated at Le Mans in 1957 and 1958.Bristol then stopped production of engines for AC Ace and a 6 cylinder engine from the Ford Zephyr was used instead. This car could produce a safe 170 bhp (127 kW) and a 125 mph (201 km/h) top speed. In 1962, Carroll Shelby approached AC to use a small block Ford V8 Motor in the Ace chassis, producing the AC Cobra. It was used in US sports car racing. AC later developed the AC 428 or Frua after realizing a need to satisfy wealthy customers. In 1967 the long stroked 428 motor became available and the car became the AC Frua. Its production ended in 1973.Throught the 1970s and 1980s,AC developed the ME3000 but later production had to be halted due to recession problems. Besides, Hurlock(company owner) health condition was worsening. It later changed hands with just a production of few cars and it was not until 1996 that they tried to revive AC. AC relocated to Malta in1995 and it is now making the carbon-fibre bodied AC MkV.
